In fact, if a character was actually transgender, anime fans would probably call you out for using that word on them. However, in the anime community, the word is almost exclusively used in reference to cisgender male characters who look feminine, but are still male both physically and mentally. My understanding is that normally, calling someone a "trap" can be a transphobic slur.
